Fix garbled text and mojibake

Paste text that was read with the wrong encoding. A common mix-up turns accents and quotes into sequences such as café, it’s, and ü. The repair runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

How to repair encoding

Paste the garbled text into the first box and click Fix automatically. If the text was UTF-8 read as Windows-1252 or Latin-1, including text that was misread twice, the repaired copy appears below.

If nothing changes, pick how the bytes were read and what they should be, then click Apply encodings. Copy puts the repaired text on the clipboard.

Frequently asked questions

What is mojibake?

Mojibake is text that was saved in one encoding and then read as another. UTF-8 read as Windows-1252 is the usual case, and it turns accents and punctuation into odd character sequences.

How do I fix garbled text?

Paste the garbled text and click Fix automatically. The repair runs in your browser, and the text stays on your device.

What if automatic repair does not change the text?

Choose how the bytes were read and what they should be, then click Apply encodings. Windows-1252 and ISO-8859-1 cover the usual cases. Shift-JIS, EUC-KR, and GBK are there when the bytes were really one of those encodings.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Encoding Repair runs entirely in your browser.
